Wednesday
It's been a lovely two days of hot showers at St Paul's but today I decided to spend a couple of nights at Sarah's...She lives really centrally, near VSO and works next door to MINEDUC for DECADE, a human rights organisation. It was good to catch up and after a great pasta dish, with lashings of grated cheese, we spent the evening on the verandah sipping Mutzigs and playing with her new cats, Sula and errr a grey one with a long Rwandan name...
Work today was pretty good. We've now got our head round the stats and after hours of number crunching last week, it was actually quite satisfying making the data look pretty in a variety of bar graphs and pie charts...yes, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz indeed.
Sensing our boredom, John arranged for us to see the current 'training of trainers' taking place. It's been arranged by MINEDUC and the lead trainer who devised the new material, Meredith is excellent. We arrived there and after the usual introductions, we were invited to observe a session. Meredith was taking one group and two Peace Corps girls the other. Tiga and I went to this one and were immediately asked if we would like to facilitate...Drawing the short straw, and after having had a quick peek at the objectives, I got up and modelled a lesson for dialogues...It was fine, pretty much what I do with my schools, but I think the girls were grateful of the support. The Peace Corps are similiar to VSO but tend to be younger and generally speaking have less experience because of this. The girls were doing their best but weren't quite sure how to handle the material. They weren't teachers and normally worked in Health, so pretty difficult. We had a good chat, I found out they live quite near me, in Butare and then made our way back to the ministry.
In the afternoon, John got a call from Meredith asking if we could help with the rest of the training. It seemed the girls had asked for a bit more help with running the sessions. Anyway, we decided that Ken and Michael would go along today (Thursday) and I'll do Friday morning. It'll be a nice break from the excel spreadsheets and complements the training back in Gikongoro...
It's Salsa night at Pasadena's tonight which should be good then tomorrow after training and a Nakumat spree, am looking forward to getting back home. I feel like a tortoise at the mo, with my backpack being a permanent appendage it will be nice not to have that and to sleep in my own bed for a while...
