So what's new?

Well, I've finally accepted a placement! It's in Gikongoro, Nyamagabe district, Rwanda. Actual departure date is yet to be finalised but it's provisionally Jan 18th so looking forward to a great Christmas. I'll be working as a primary methodology trainer and eh.. that's about all I know now. Very broadly, it will involve training teachers in the methods we have here and also demonstrating 'model' classrooms. This is all very well but with the prospect of up to 70 in a class the task becomes more and more daunting. Still, there are all kinds of training opportunities before then (SKIWD: skills in work and development and teacher training) which I hope will prepare me for what's to come - We shall see...

Compared to the one I rejected, this sounds far less isolated and there is rumour of internet connection which is good. I've also been emailing vols who are or who have been out there to get an idea about living conditions and the job itself but it's so hard to know reality of anything till you're there so am keeping an open mind, as usual...

Having accepted the placement, I am now on countdown with lists of jobs to do before I go, not least arranging the final vaccinations. I still have yellow fever, rabies and a final hep B to do, no fun. Have just been reading about all the side-effects of the anti-malarial drugs too - after some dodgy punch in Thailand I'm very cautious about taking anything vaguely mind-altering but I guess malaria's one to avoid.

One reason why I've been particularly crap at adding any more to this blog is because I've managed to get myself a job. Was completely unintentional as I was looking forward to day to day supply, rather than anything more permanent. However, school is a bus ride away and head has said that she can give me 5 days a week until January and days off when I need for the VSO courses, great! Easy work too, no planning and different classes everyday- am really loving the chance to just teach, feels great. I'm thinking, the need to think on my feet will come in very useful once in placement.

Writing on a hangover is no fun but when it's raining outside it's at least a distraction. Am also thinking about all the things I'll miss...Obviously the rain is not one but not being able to go out with friends is something I'm already sad about. I realise how much I take for granted firends and family so am determined to make sure these last few months are full of fun. Bring it on...
