A strange eve. It seems that over the weekend the outhouses were broken into. I say broken into but it’s all a little odd…
Firstly, there are two outhouses, one where Latislas stays and the other is where Anne-Marie cooks - both of which are normally padlocked. Anyway, it seems that the ‘burglars’ managed to unpick the lock to Latislas’ door (since his padlock was intact!) and take the key to the other one which for some reason Latislas had in there. Apparently, a handful of charcoal was taken as well as the padlock and key. The plantains have also just ripened so these along with some passion fruit were also taken . Anne-Marie and I though were more than a little suspicious. Latislas normally keeps his clothes there but a week ago he took them all home telling Anne-Marie that he thought we might get broken into (!). As well as this he has been hinting that I should maybe consider getting a day guard, since he only works at night…And if I wanted he’d be willing to do it - at a cost of course.
As it happens, with the help of Anne-Marie - who didn’t believe him for a second, I explained that his padlock would now secure the charcoal and that if I felt I needed more security I would have to take a long hard look at the current arrangements and make drastic changes. Anne-marie also added that as our guard, we needed to feel that he was being honest with us. At this he suddenly revealed that he could perhaps stay around for longer during the day and said it was probably kids who came in through the fence so would ask the village chief to have a word.
I’m not really sure what the real story is but I feel quite confident that Latislas has it all under control now…So don't have nightmares.
